Eyelid Surgery

Eyelids are important components that contribute to the appearance of eyes. Since, the appearance of eye has an effect on the overall personality of the individual, the surgery is of importance. Also known as blepharoplasty, this is normally used to correct any deformalities, disfigurations and defects concerning the eyelids. The eyelid surgery is commonly performed to minimize the bagginess of the eyelids. The surgery aims to remove the excess skin from the eyelid portion. Removal of excess fat, muscles etc may also be performed. A number of persons seek this procedure to improve their cosmetic appearance. There are also cases wherein this surgery is used to improve the sight, particularly in older individuals.

Upper and lower eyelid reduction

Muscles surrounding the eye are subject to constant motion throughout one’s life. A mere blink of an eye can be regarded as a sequence of contraction and relaxation of eye muscles. Due to this excessive work of the muscles, it is quite natural for them to loose their elasticity. When this issue is combined with gravitational effects, excessive portion of the skin gets accumulated near the eyelids. This is known as wrinkles. As time progresses, this hanging stretch of skin can cause obstruction to vision.

The entire surgical procedure takes almost 2 hours for successful completion. In most cases, local anesthesia is given to numb the patient is appropriate areas. Tiny incisions are made in the natural lines of the eye. Materials like excess skin, fat etc are removed through these incisions to virtually ‘lift’ this portion. Using small sutures, these incisions are closed. Various techniques can be used for treating the lower eyelids. In a particular procedure known as the transconjunctival technique, the incision is done inside the eyelid. After the procedure, the skin lines are softened by either employing erbium laser or carbon dioxide.

Eye shaping

An attractive almond shaped eye is the dream of every individual. In such ‘exotic eyes’, the corners are turned up, making them beautifully balanced. Such an eye is indeed welcoming and attractive. They are captivating and boost the overall confidence of the individual. Certain individuals are blessed with these sorts of eyes. In others, this surgical procedure can help them to rectify even the slightest of the deformities in the eye-shape. Although blepharoplasty can be performed to improve the eye shape, it is not the only procedure that can perform this job. Another surgical procedure, known as canthoplasty can be used to correct the corner of the eye, leading to the much desired almond shape.

Canthoplasty is a surgical procedure performed either to rectify the drooping look in the eye corner or to create an upward slant in the outer corner of the eyelid. It is so named because it involves modification of the lower canthal tendon. Generally, the modification can be either tightening or shifting. In majority of cases, this procedure is performed by having a natural crease applied to the appropriate regions of the eye. Care is taken so that normal vision is not affected.
